For the latest information on the ByHeart infant formula recall, please visit the CDC and FDA websites.

A nationwide recall has been issued for ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula because some babies who used the formula became sick with infant botulism. If your baby uses this formula, here is what you need to know and the steps you should take to keep your family safe.

Why was ByHeart formula recalled?

Health officials are investigating a link between ByHeart infant formula and cases of infant botulism. During this investigation, ByHeart decided to recall all lots of its Whole Nutrition Infant Formula cans and Anywhere Pack sticks. Families are being told to stop using the product right away while the investigation continues.

What is infant botulism?

Infant botulism occurs when a baby swallows spores from a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. These spores can grow in a baby’s gut and make a toxin that affects nerves and muscles. The illness is rare but can be serious. Getting medical care early is important.

Botulism signs to watch for:

  • Weak suck or poor feeding
  • A softer or weaker cry
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Less facial expression
  • Trouble lifting or controlling the head
  • Floppy or weak muscles
  • Trouble breathing in more serious cases
  • Constipation

If your baby has used ByHeart formula and shows any of these symptoms, call your pediatrician or go to the emergency department right away.

What parents should do now

Stop using ByHeart formula

Do not use or donate any ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula, no matter the lot number. Keep it separate from other baby items and label it “Do Not Use.”

Check your product

If you still have the formula at home:

  • Take a picture of the lot number or the “use by” date
  • Seal the formula in a bag
  • Return or dispose of it based on official recall instructions
  • Wash bottles, scoops and any surfaces the formula touched

Watch your baby for symptoms

Symptoms can appear days or even weeks after a baby uses the formula. If you see changes like constipation, poor feeding, a weak cry or floppy muscles, contact your pediatrician right away. Let them know your baby used ByHeart formula.

Talk with your pediatrician

Your pediatrician can help you choose a safe formula to use next. They can also give you guidance if your baby has allergies or special feeding needs.

The bottom line

It is normal to feel worried about a recall, especially when it involves something your baby eats. The most important steps are simple: stop using the formula, watch your baby for symptoms and talk with your pediatrician if you have concerns. Acting early helps keep your baby safe.
