Pediatric neuropsychiatrist Jay Salpekar, MD, recommends a combination of therapy, education, behavior modification and medicine for treating children with ADHD.
What is ADHD?
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), also called attention-deficit disorder, is a behavior disorder that usually first diagnosed in childhood. It is characterized by inattention, impulsivity and, in some cases, hyperactivity. These symptoms usually occur together, but sometimes one may occur without the other(s).
Hyperactivity, when present, is almost always apparent by the age of 7 and may also be apparent in very young preschoolers. Inattention or attention-deficit may not be evident until a child faces the expectations of elementary school.
The number of children diagnosed with ADHD is on the rise. According to a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 11% of school-aged children have an ADHD diagnosis by a health care provider.
Treating ADHD
So, what are parents of kids with ADHD to do? The CDC says more than ever, parents are turning to medication. However, Dr. Salpekar suggests a tailor-made approach that caters to the child’s needs. In the video below, Dr. Salpekar explains the signs, symptoms and treatments for ADHD.
